“Heard Your Voice in Dresden” - Elvis Perkins in Dearland

NPR All Songs Considered extensively covered the 2009 Newport Folk concert two weeks ago.

The festival sounded amazing and I’ve really enjoyed listening to a couple of the live sets

  • Iron & Wine brought back “Such Great Heights” which I haven’t heard since I was 17
  • Lastly, Mavis Staples’ set is unreal - Making her 1960s Gospel/Soul/civil rights anthem sound so fresh

My big discovery from the Festival has to be Elvis Perkins. His straightforward singer-songwriter sound gives way to a wide variety of fleshed out, exciting sounds - including New Orleans jazz, ragtime, Tom Petty-ish rock, and Arcade Fire-ish orchestral pieces. In the end, it’s all folk. Check out “I Heard Your Voice in Dresden” and listen to his, and other, live set at the NPR website.
