Let’s Get Nerdy!
Let’s Get Nerdy!
Since it’s finals week, it seems appropriate to make a post with some references to getting “brainy.”
First: Check out the website Arts and Letters Daily. It’s like the pseudo-philosopher’s response to Hype Machine. The site publishes three articles, daily. These articles fall under the categories, “Articles of Note”, “New Books”, and “Essays and Opinion.” They have what seems like a high standard of quality, and the daily articles might serve you as a good source of thought-stimulation before you head on to the greater task of trying to convince your teachers that you haven’t ignored them all semester.
Second: Keep your eyes peeled for the “academic walk of shame.” We all know that if you head to the long walk between 7-9am on a weekend-day, there’s a good chance you’ll see a few “young adults” stumbling back to their dorm rooms after a long, romantic evening. Well, if during finals week you happen to head to the library between the hours of 7-9am, you may see a different breed of walkers-of-shame.
These are the students who “pulled all-nighters” (I still don’t know why we don’t just say we “worked all night”, but whatever). After a night of getting f’d by a paper or test or project that they didn’t start until the previous evening, these academic walkers-of-shame will look as disheveled and flustered and off-centered as those kids you see on Friday mornings who are walking home after spending a romantic night with a person whom they hadn’t met until Thursday night. Don’t ask them if their night was productive, they might bite.
