I don’t really enjoy mashups where there’s too much going on; artists like Girl Talk, Super Mash Bros., and their contemporaries have taken things to a level at which listening requires way too much effort and focus to make sense of the noise. Always and without fail. Sorry to those who think differently.
As such, I’m an avid fan of The Hood Internet, who exploded all over the blogosphere over a year ago but for the most part have returned to their under-the-radar status (at least as far as I can tell).
It’s unfortunate, because their mashups are easily some of the cleanest out there. Check out this recently rediscovered (gotta love iTunes shuffle) effort that features The Beastie Boys’ “Shake Your Rump” rocking the hell out of the originally happy-dancy “Good Old Fashioned Nightmare” via Matt and Kim.
A cleanly done re-energization of two originally great songs. That’s what mashups are really about, at least to me.
