NAKED

You know when you find a song that changes your life? This track is fucking unbelievable. Orchestral. Danceable. Emotional. Beautiful. Everything I want pop music to be.

So I found this interview that I have to share with you all. It’s with writer David Coggins, who, I must admit, I had never heard of until now. Apparently he’s all over the place, writing for Interview Magazine and a ton of blogs. This video interview is part of this project sponsored by Absolut called “THIRTY DAYS NY”. According to the website “THIRTYDAYSNY is a celebration of the merger of arts and culture. The challenge was building out, organizing, managing, and presenting a live gallery space open to the public for one month in the heart of New York City.” More info about it can be found here. Sounds/looks amazing.

But back to my man Mr. Coggins. I’ve learned a few things about him (and you will too if you watch the interview.) He’s got an impressive pad, with an amazing college of books and random collectibles. He can simultaneously pull off a beard AND a jacket and tie. And he’s pretentious, but in a lovable way. So enjoy this interesting character, check out Thirty Days NY, AND go to the concert on Tuesday.

P.S. David Coggins, if you Google your name and this comes up, please be my friend.

So here’s an interesting little video I found over at the website MediaBistro. It’s of the cast and crew of Mad Men, one of my favorite shows ever, singing along to the main song from Bye Bye Birdie. In one of the more recent episodes, the folks at Sterling Cooper try to emulate Ann Margaret’s magical sex appeal in one of their advertising campaigns.

I don’t know whether to laugh, cringe, or join in: Don and Betty (Jon Hamm and January Jones) do an excellent dance, Roger Sterling (John Slattery) sings in drag, and Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) texts on an iPhone or Blackberry while still in character and 1960’s garb.

Anyway, it’s definitely a departure from the norm and a real treat.

Pursuit of Happiness

Kid Cudi recently released a new (alternate) video to his song Pursuit of Happiness.  In it, Cudi battles his nightmares attempting to remove himself from the loop of constant terror and cold sweats.  The song itself is already amazing, but combined with very artistic visual portrayal it has become one of the best videos that I have ever seen.

Also, Ratatat member Mike Stroud gets some shine in the video… Check it out!

OK Go - This Too Shall Pass - Rube Goldberg Machine version

I am not too familiar with Ok Go’s music, but this video needed to be posted. Ok Go made an alternate video for their single “This Too Shall Pass”. The video is based on a Rube Goldberg Machine (a deliberately over engineered machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction). Everything in this video is one working chain reaction started by a car hitting dominoes in the very beginning. This video is one of the coolest music videos I have ever seen. Enjoy

The Vampire Weekend Boys have put out their latest music video, and it is as weird as ever. The band is no stranger to quirky videos, but this one is pretty unprecedented with a broad range of cameos (my personal favorite is RZA). See you all at the open mic!

The new Sophie Muller directed Broken Bells video for The High Road has been released and has me more intrigued for their debut 3-09-2010. The duo’s shared journey is filled with some great shots.

Enter Ninja, a South African MC who, along with Yo-landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek, comprise Die Antwoord.

Ninja is one of the more curious guys I’ve seen up-and-coming for a while. His work is obviously in the realm of what most of us would consider hipster, for its absurdity suggests that it should be taken ironically. To Ninja, however, it’s not. He’s serious that he has “you know, some serious gangster skill on the mark”, and these guys embrace what would immediately be looked upon as ridiculous and trumpet it as the best thing since sliced bread; that’s certainly something not to be overlooked.

I’ll admit, there’s nothing groundbreaking about “Enter the Ninja”, but there’s a ton that is just damn interesting. For one thing, the hook is addicting beyond belief (try and not get it stuck in your head - I dare you). Also, you cannot deny that Ninja is just awesome to listen to, and while his accent is sometimes incomprehensible (if he’s speaking English at all), his flow is undeniably unique and he spits with a fervor that echoes the intensity of Eminem and K’naan.

Summary: Die Antwoord is, if nothing else, at least worth a look and, depending on how you feel, maybe a laugh. The video I’ve posted above is the official music video for their track “Enter the Ninja”. Really cool visually and really addicting musically. Be sure to check out the impromptu interview and short-form-video for their track “Zef Side” as well - that thing’s ridiculous.
