All I want for Christmas is Yeasayer’s “Odd Blood.” Combining influences ranging from the irresistible beats of 70s disco to the plaintive wails of african tribal music, the new album by the Brooklyn band shows off the group’s versatility and unique appeal. I hear hints of Air France, Beach House, Girls, Animal Collective, and…Creed? (Madder Red). Seriously seductive. Though the album doesn’t technically drop until February 8th, check out some of the tracks:

ONE is my favorite song from the new album, with a crazy-optimistic dance beat and lyrics about a mix of post-break-up emotions.

Also check out Madder Red and Ambling Alp.

it’s love: polyvore.com. make-your-own online collages with items off of a huge range of fashion and interior design websites…a serious new form of procrastination.
this set is a little ode to parisian style on: my last day in paris!

gifting the blog with some much-needed musical estrogen, i thought i’d share a few of my favorite female offerings to the indie scene lately…..

school of seven bells’ newly relesed album “alpinisms” is so good i couldn’t recommend just one song…check out “prince of peace” and “for kalaja mari (drum outtake mix)” (playing above)

warpaint’s song “billie holiday” is an awesome gloomy day tune

taken by trees just released a solemnly sweet new ep following their september album, but my favorite song is still their cover of animal collective’s “my girls” (aptly called “my boys”)

and i don’t know if recent late night is anything like paris clubs, but la roux’s “bulletproof” has been on heavy rotation this semester—also check out their more lighthearted but equally empowering song “as if by magic.”

i’m not technically savvy enough (yet) to know how to do links for the songs but….they’re available via hypem (and are all great!)

in spring 2008, i must have had the lyric “and it feels so unnatural/peter gabriel too” in my head for months. now, peter gabriel himself finally comes out with a cover of vampire weekend’s “cape cod kwassa kwassa” in collaboration with hot chip. though the song sounds uncannily like the theme song from disney’s “tarzan,” i dig the idea.

and check out these other recent covers:

the kooks- “kids” by mgmt (another blast from spring 2008)

florence and the machine- “halo” by beyoncé

imogen heap- “thriller” by michael jackson

a few of the songs i was listening to this weekend while pondering the fields of long grass and little romanesque churches from a bus window in normandy (i know, i know):
saddle mountains - le loup
comme des enfants - coeur de pirate
temazcal - monsters of folk
coastline - gentleman reg
switched on - islands
love’s dart - django django
and of course, some ever inspiring dharma talks from buddhist nun pema chödrön…but that’s a bit of a non sequitur.
there is the most AMAZING new music out lately, non? miss all of you at school!
