You guys- I AM OBSESSED

This is the new Julian Casablancas (from The Strokes) single- its called 11th Dimension, and its off his new album (dropping Oct 19th) Phrazes For The Young. It’s amazing. Pollock and I decided it’s Strokes meets New Order meets the 80s meets the 2000s. That doesn’t sound right, but it makes sense when you listen to it. Over and over again. I expect to hear it at latenight when I come back next week to see all of you.

SORRY! SORRY! I haven’t posted in sooo long, I know, but this will make up for it. This is Rubik, a Finnish band that I have been drooling over for about a month. Comparisons to Animal Collective, Arcade Fire and the less popular but still amazing Mice Parade can be made, but I think this song Fire Age stands on it’s own as one of the most elated, uplifting, and Scandanavian songs I have heard this summer. I love how it sort of teases you at first, adding and taking away layers, and then it just lets you have it all at once. THE CHORUS! THE MELODY! THE XYLOPHONE! Listen to it on the first day of school for me- no more of those for this old lady.

WAIT SORRY Fire Age was too big to post, so heres No Escape instead. But go to here for Fire Age: http://hypem.com/#/track/797720/Rubik-Fire+Age

I promise I will post more often.

SO Antony from Antony & The Johnsons did a cover of Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love”; apparently it’s from a few years ago, but I just found it (thanks perez, so embarassing but whatever, he’s down with some good shit) and I LOVE IT! I don’t know if it’s a testament to the quality of Beyonce’s songwriting ability, or Antony’s beautiful voice that makes almost any song sound 10x better, but I think this is a really great cover. It’s got all the same melodies as Beyonce’s version, but the orchestra and Antony’s style of singing give it a haunting quality that I never would have guessed the song was capable of. I can’t lie, though. I really wanted Jay-Z to pop in and do his part, but that might have been a little too nuts.

Plastic Operator’s song Folder- reminds me of a mix between The Notwist and Figurine

SOOOO I was lucky enough to go see The Cool Kids, Jadakiss, Big Boi, and Clipse last week at Terminal 5, and you know, it was fun as far as hip hop concerts go- the stupid MC wasted so much precious time to the point where Clipse only played like 4 songs, 3 of them new, meaning my top ten album Hell Hath No Fury was not properly represented but what are ya gonna do, ya know? BUT the sad part was I missed WALE! So depressing because everyone that was there said he was amazing and probably the best part of the whole set (I find that hard to believe because Big Boi could not have been beat…I’m biased though, because two of my OTHER top ten albums are Outkast.)

ANYWAY here is a Wale song for you that I have been enjoying called New Soul featuring Yael Naim. It’s a nice song for a walk in the summertime. I know I push a lot of hip hop on here, but I think this guy will be a long lasting talent- this song reminds me a little of Lupe with his sound, but the sample reminds me of RJD2 and the whole Def Jux style…. anyway, enjoy

I love Fred Falke- everything he remixes is almost consistently better than the original, and this is no different. This is his remix of Annie’s Anthonio but its got that classic falke disco sound that makes you want to put on your sparkly pants and tease your disco fro and go dancing.

If you like this, then check out Erlend Oye’s DJ Kicks, there is an amazing song on there with Fred and Alan Braxe called RUBICON and everyone who I have ever played it for is OBSESSED!

I know scotty already let yall know about the amazingness that is Discovery, a side project for Vampire Weekend keyboardist and producer Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot lead singer Wes Miles, but in the wake of Michael Jackson’s death (my favorite MJ jam? Black or White. Especially the album version where the kid is listening to the tape deck in his room and his dad gets pissed off) I thought I’d post their cover of I Want You Back. Blast it this week when you start to realize just how many people worldwide are still obsessed with the King of Pop (one good thing that has come out of his death? Every bar/restaurant I have been to since has ONLY played his greatest hits, which means there is that many more opportunities for an impromptu latenight dance sesh) Discovery’s album drops July 6th, but if you scroll down you can listen to a few more of their songs compliments of Scotty the wunderkinds media player… ENJOY
