THE MOTH

A friend introduced me to The Moth a few months ago, but at this point I think it’s official. I’m hooked.
The Moth is a non-profit organization in New York City that puts on free storytelling events all over the country. It was founded some years ago by a New Yorker who missed the evenings on his rural Georgia porch when old timers would gather ‘round a lone lantern and, flocked by moths, share stories of old and new.
They offer tons of programs all-year long, including the StorySLAM, a completely open storytelling competition with locations in New York, Detroit, LA, Chicago, and beyond.
Their most accessible resource, however, is their weekly podcast.
”As a subscriber to the Moth Podcast you will receive one free Moth story per week to listen to at your leisure on your iPod/MP3 player or your computer. These are some of our favorites among the thousands of stories we have recorded at our Moth Mainstage shows, Moth StorySLAMs and MothShop Community shows over the last 10 years. You will also have access to a limited backlog of previous episodes.
The stories range in length from approximately 5 to 17 minutes. Sometimes funny, occasionally sad, often poignant, we hope you will find the stories memorable and representative of many aspects of human experience. Because the stories are culled from many years worth of archives, the sound quality varies.”
