Kid Cudi & Dan Black - Symphonies Video

I got turned onto Dan Black last spring with his cover of Notorious BIG’s Hypnotize.

He took the same beat, made an original track called Symphonies, and did a remix with Kid Cudi. That’s a lot of mileage out of one track.

Anyways, the music video for the Kid Cudi remix came out this week and I think it’s pretty fresh. Like Justice’s DVNO video’s use of logos, Black and Cudi pay homage to a wide variety of movie title sequences.

BONUS

1) our new friend Jeff put together this Passion Pit remix of the original Symphonies. This wasn’t part of the playlist Tuesday night but still gives me flashbacks to that after-party. Listen to it here (mp3/right-click to download)

2) If you’re a fan of classic movie titles, check out this website, The Art of the Title - it compiles the best title sequences in the past 20 years. Random, but awesome! Below are a few of my favorites.

Catch Me If You Can

Romeo + Juliet

Wall-E

Thank You For Smoking

Older movies are way better but I can’t find many online.

The Unknown Hipster

I recently came across the blog The Unknown Hipster, written by Illustrator Jean Philippe Delhomme.

The blog gives a light but satirical look at life in New York’s high society. The unnamed narrator reviews art exhibitions, gallery openings and fashion shows, as well as explaining his day-to-day exploring the city.

What makes the blog so unique is that each post contains a handful of paintings and drawings done by Delhomme to illustrate his adventures. The illustrations, as well as the well-written tone sets The Unknown Hipster apart from other blogs. You feel as though you’re reading an actual work of literature, instead of someone’s train of thought. My only complaint is that the blog isn’t updated enough. I guess quality over quantity is a lesson I should accept.

Below is an excerpt of his day exploring Chelsea galleries in March, pictures included.

Hunting rubber boots, worn in various colors, brought a cheerful note to the dark mood of the day.

Melting snow left a handful of Art Lovers stranded on slouchy snow banks with little chance of rescue from gallery assistants.

Ironic wiring in a Banks Violette installation at Gladstone – a sculpture which somehow formally echoed my hat. Being in a mundane state of mind, I wondered how one could vacuum between the wires without messing up the piece.

Mill guests Darwin Deez have released their music video for the song “Radar Detector” (blogged about here).

The video is fun, showing the band being quirky and endearing… that sounds about par for the course.

What type are you?

if you’re looking to procrastinate, check out this interactive video called “What Type Are You?” put on by design company, Pentagram.

Answering four basic questions, you are told which typeset best matches your personality. The experience is done with well shot video clips and a clean layout.

Apparently, I am a “Universal” type (because I’m rational, understated, progressive, and relaxed).

also, great show last night everyone! thanks for coming out!

New Broken Social Scene! Not much more to say - this song gets me excited for the new album in May (named Forgiveness Rock Record).

The Vampire Weekend Boys have put out their latest music video, and it is as weird as ever. The band is no stranger to quirky videos, but this one is pretty unprecedented with a broad range of cameos (my personal favorite is RZA). See you all at the open mic!

self described “happy music for sad people”

I’ve been really into Darwin Deez for the past few weeks. The band has been getting a lot of good press online and are one of my votes for Mill acts in 2010.

Darwin Deez - “Radar Detector” (mp3 from WRMC)

The poppy guitars and claps of Radar Detector feels like it was jacked from the first season of the OC, but the simplicity and quirkiness of the song gives it more personality.

Bonus - Xaphoon Jones, creator of indie-gone-hiphop tracks for Chiddy Bang has remixed the song, giving it his usual grimy synth beat. The vocal sample sounds good and the change in the song’s tone is creative take on a cutesy synth-pop song.

Back to School, Back to Chemistry, Back to Physics

Google Chrome, now out for Mac, is Google’s new web browser. We’re not a tech blog (and I’m not a techie) so I won’t talk about the actual program (even though its awesome). However, I will return to my love of good commercials (no seriously) and praise the ad campaign.

The promo video, based on 8 short vignettes, is a refreshing break from the hi-tech, digital offerings of Microsoft and Apple. Google identifies the 7 main components of Chrome that really stand out, and attempts to represent them using craft designs and visual tricks. The lack of post-production is a clever reminder that Google is trying to make things simpler not more complicated.

here’s the making of video to see how these different vignettes were made…
